Mauritius
The population crashed to an all time low of only 4 birds by 1974 and was considered the rarest bird in the world. Only the Spix macaw was rarer at a single individual discovered in 1992 (since extinct in the wild). Initial attempts at conservation failed but slowly the population increased to about 800 individuals today.
